was created for the improvement of life’s qualities for certain children and families that may need special help.
Our goal is to provide grants for quality of life issues such as, special recreation, medical help, housing, or special education.
The foundation has evolved from a golf outing started 8 years ago. It has quickly become one of the most enjoyable and rewarding events participants have been involved with. When the event started 8 years ago with a few players at Virginia National Golf Club, the only thing that was anticipated was that everyone would have a great time. Dennis Mitchell noted. “The following January I started receiving phone calls inquiring when I was going to have my outing. I responded by asking what outing?” He finally conceded and scheduled the second year. After discussions with this core group, it was decided to make it a benefit. Our co-founder, Larry Hardman and Dennis contacted Special Olympics to see if they needed to do anything special to make them the beneficiary. Everyone orginally anticipated making a couple hundred dollars for them. They responded that we need not do anything special. That very first year we knew that something special was about to happen. We made a little over $5000.00 for Special Olympics. The outing continued to grow by leaps and bounds. The next year we filled the course and had to turn people away. That year we made $30,000.00 for Special Olympics. The following year we raised the bar and doubled the number of players and had to go to a split shotgun, one group in the morning and one group in the afternoon. Dennis notes, "I don’t believe anyone in his or her wildest dreams imagined it would grow to this magnitude."
The staff at Virginia National have been exceptionally accommodating and make having a successful outing easy. Most everyone who has played in this outing has returned to enjoy the hospitality of the golf course. Everyone that is participating or that has participated should feel a strong sense of pride and accomplishment. We have raised almost $200,000 for Loudoun Special Olympics over the years. The Special Olympians make our efforts seem easy. They are so wonderful in their purity that pro athletes should look to them as examples for them to follow. Special Olympics will remain as one of the main beneficiaries for the foundation. With the success that we have had we have begun to donate to other worthy groups or individuals with certain needs. We have found that many charities spend more money than they give to the designated recipients. We are committed to give 100% of funds earned, after expenses, back to the community. We will have no paid staff or costs other than the expenses associated with our fundraising events.
Dennis is deeply honored to be part of this foundation and to have the opportunity to be associated with the many generous sponsors and players. We would like to thank the core founding group consisting of Tucon Construction, Merritt Properties, Virginia/Cardinal Concrete, Lerner Enterprises, ECS, Holder Construction, and Hitt Contracting. These generous companies have each hosted one of the outings and have been a sponsor every year. They have donated many hours of staff time as well as financially making it work. All of us involved have historically tried to give back to the community.
